I think I've seen a couple of reviews for software that allows you to make digital pics on your computer available to your friends and family without having to email them (I guess it's like a limited P2P for digital photos).

Does anyone have any experience with this kind of software? I think probably our parents would appreciate being able to see as many pics of the grandkid as they wanted to without us having to email them. I'd be willing to pay for software (as opposed to freeware) if it was worthwhile.

Try pbase. They won't be hosted on your PC. The servers will be up all the time, and will have far more bandwidth.

If you insist on hosting them on your own PC at home, you can install a webserver and write up some simple HTML pages.

We use www.ofoto.com, they are Kodak. You upload your pictures into a photo album with their software. You then send out invitations, make sure you uncheck the box that people have to sign in to view the photos to ease their use. If they use the slideshow they can right click and save them. They can purchase a 4 X 6 for .29, 5 X 7 for .99. We found this easy for our family members that aren't close, and they pick what they want to print and can crop and alter them to their taste. I have been using it for 3 or 4 years now, because they are Kodak I hope it has a better chance of staying up.

They are designed to shoot your photo files directly to the desktops of designated friends and family members, completely bypassing e-mail and Web sites.

The simpler service, and the one most devoted to its task, is ShareALot. When the program is running, a yellow folder icon sits on your Windows or Mac OS X desktop. To share some photos, you just drag them onto that folder. From a pop-up menu, choose Create a New Share. Your ShareALot address book appears, and you click on the names of the lucky recipients.

IMO the best way is to build your own web site. If that is not an option I also recommend Pbase.

I'll toss in photobucket as an option, too. Not as elaborate as some, but the basic verion is free, and great for storing snapshots on the Web.

If you have access to a Windows web server with ASP.NET installed, you can use nGallery (http://www.ngallery.org).
