Post R.I.P. WD40 Gig B-Drive!

Just thought I'd mention that my 40Gig TiVo B-Drive, which was one of the early handful to be upgraded when Belboz's BlessTiVo was first rolled out, seems to be on it's last legs...

Although not long life by hard drive standards, I'll give it credit for all the work its done.

I've still never backed up, but I think I'll still be able to use Tiger's tools to do so - and expand bigger! Either that or buy a new TiVo also and have two to play with.

In another thread Hinsdale states that Maxtor head clicking is normal? Is this unique to Maxtor or has anyone heard of this happening to Western Digital's? I'm still thinking it's crapping out - the sound just started the other day. It still plays video and records fine - I just don't like the noise...

If you end up losing the Tive, Circuit City has Philips DSR6000R's for $99. You only have to activate it within 30 days. No minimum length of service. Just activate it for a month, and then cancel.. You've got a perfectly good Tivo to play with.

I picked up a few, and want to try the TivoNet thing.

I was using the questioners term in describing the "clicking" noise that you hear when the drive is seeking. And was just informing him of the amset utility for Maxtors that will reduce the noise level during seeks.

This does not apply to real "clicking" that suddenly develops on a drive. I would tend to agree that it may be on its last legs and would try and get a MFS Tools backup asap.

By the way sonnik, how long had the drive been running? It will be interesting to start gathering some data on the lifespan of drives in the rigorous TiVO environment.

These are DirecTiVos and are useless if you cancel DirecTv and I dont believe you are able to just cancel the TiVo subscription and keep DirecTV (someone correct me if im wrong). DirecTiVos also are more difficult to install TiVoNet and if you have already downloaded 2.5 for the dual tuners.. then you will not be able to install any hacks like TiVonet unless you have a pre 2.5 backup.

Well, I upgraded right when Dylan released his bootdisk - so to my recollection that was July 2000 - so I guess that's 16 months or so?

I bought the TiVo in January of 2000. I'm a little suprised that the B drive went before the A drive, of course - 40 Gig + 13.6 Gig = 53.6 Gig, so I guess you could say the 40 Gig B drive sees nearly 75% of the traffic - adding to its wear and tear. I had TiVo working fairly hard.

Also note that this drive was installed before the brackets were widely available at 9thtee.com - I installed with the rubber bumpers and tie-wraps suggested prior to BlessTiVo. Perhaps if this drive were a little more secure and better heat dissipation, it would have lasted longer.

You're right - it will be interesting to see if we see any trend of old upgrades going bad - I've already noted a few here and there in this Forum.

I've got the TiVo unplugged right now - and the way I have my system set up I can't watch regular TV without it in the loop - it's actually less hassle to do some hard drive management than it is to change my cabling.

Unlike some other units out there (*ahem* Ultimate TV *ahem*), at least your unsubbed DirecTiVo will still play back your recordings in full , so... (Or have they fixed it?)

As for cancelling TiVo subscription, you can just cancel that and keep DirecTV IIRC. Just your TiVo goes into "Dumb LiveTV" mode after 30 days or so.
