Hey jmccorm,

I spent about an hour on the phone calling like 10 walmarts within a 25 mile radius. I had pretty much the same experience! Two days later, I happened to walk in the Walmart a mile from my house, where the sales person I talked to on the phone said they were sold out! There it was, a 14hr phillips on the shelf. They tried to scan it and it said enter price. I was able to convince the manager to call other stores because she knew nothing about the $99 deal. After 20 minutes of patience, I walked out the door with the $99 Tivo.

The moral of the story is:
You might have to take a road trip and check out the Walmarts in your area. The sales persons often don't care. I have personally witnessed one who answered the phone, then asked the caller to hold why they went to check. But they never went to check! A minute or two later the salesperson picked up the phone and tells the caller sorry, ALL SOLD OUT.

Just thought I'd throw my comments in here. After reading the first post, I stopped at my wally world on the way home. 4-5 20 hour units and one "demo" 14 hour box. I had the guy check out the 20 hour box and it was as marked, $265 or so. Went back a few days later, the "demo" box was gone, the display was gone, and the 4-5 boxes are stacked on the top shelf at the end of the electronics department. They're going to HAVE to discount them at some point, because they aren't going to sell themselves sitting on the top shelf like that...

I just got back from my Aurora, IL Smallmart with (2) 20 hour sealed units for $120.00 each. I started this quest yesterday after reading this thread. I ran over last nite and was greeted by two 14 hour units and two 20 hour units "marked down" with a clearance tag to $200. When I asked a clerk about price adjustments, she suggested I come back tomorrow when the electronics dept manager would be in. I went back today, spoke with Bob, the manager and mentioned the $100 price I was after. The "best" he would do is $120. For any of them I asked? Sure. So I happily took the pair of 20 hour units for $120 each. Don't give up you guys, you can get lucky too. You just have to find a manager in a cooperative mood. . .

1. Today I lucked out (maybe) at my first Walmart, and got an open-box 14 hour for $100. I think it has everything except a remote and manuals (no biggie on the manuals, but does anyone have a remote from a dead unit?). They told me to call next week about the one complete unit they still have.

2. At the second Walmart I was told by the department manager that she would rather scrounge up all the pieces to her remaining 14 hour unit, pack it up, and send it back to her distributor herself, than knock even ten dollars off the $250 price--she didn't seem to be in a very good mood.

BTW: Best Buy told me they will price-match any LOCAL price for the same unit. The only caveat is that the competitor must have it in stock. An acceptable proof is a receipt from the other store (since it shows both price and the fact that they had at least one in stock).

Good Luck

Stephen

Thanks for the encouraging words. I may have to go back to Wal Mart and see the manager about one of the 5 212's they have. I want more space, but I don't want to hack the lifetime service, 4 year Best Buy Warrantie'd 312 I have...

Went to the wallmart and sams club in the gaithersburg / frederick MD area. No dice. Don't see any machines.

Then stopped by target just to look around and found 4 20 hr phillips units on clearance for $169.95 each. Since I already have 2 14 hr phillips units, I was able to resist the temptation to pick them up. I will hold out for that $100 neighborhood.

still looking ......

BTW, if you can show proof that another store sells these units at $100 or $120, can you get one from Circuit City, or Best buy on a price match at that price.

Anybody have a thought on that?

Yes, MikeB2's Walmart Receipts do work. I got a 20 hour at Kmart for $125. Regular price was $299.

Thanks MikeB2!

What ever you do don't bother trying to look for a cheap TiVo in Northern VA! Both the Targets in my area were sold out the Wal-Mart had 1 on the shelf. It looked like an open box, had $299.98 printed on the label and it scanned up for $249.98!

I went home happy eventually though. I decided to wait until I can get a cheap Sony SA (my sony is so much nicer than my philips ) and got a 60GB drive for the sony instead

PS, anyone looking to sell a Sony SA unit?

My local walmart has two 20hr units in stock, both on clearance. One has nothing but the unit, $196.00. The other is complete at $259.00. I had with me print screens from Best Buy and Amazon.com both showing prices of $199.99. I asked if they would price match either of these and they could not unless the price is actually printed in a news paper ad. Could they call to confirm price? Nope. I tried to explain the logic of their situation, "Your clearance price is higher then Best Buy, who do you justify that?" but they (four employees) didnt understand. It was odd that the whole department was helping me while a huge line was forming at the electronics register. I think they were just trying to figure out what a Tivo was :-)

Cool

I gave up on the clueless Wallymart people ("TiVo" she asked, looking like a deer caught in the headlights!) so I went to Circus City. They had an OB Sony SVR-2000 SA. No remote, no cables .. not even a power cable. 'Sold it to me for $99.00. I kept it for one day and returned it when I came to my senses. There was no way I could even plug it in and see if it was DOA without a remote (my original is a Philips). Sony parts was B/O'd for a month on the remote, so that would also have been getting dangerously close to the return-or-else-it's-yours date!

I took that puppy back and paid another $249. for a Philips DirecTiVo.

**BUT WAIT** there's more ..

With the $100. mail-in rebate on the Philips, my price will be $249. I figured that by time I paid ~$37. for a remote and $10. for the power cable (I probly have 50 that would fit around the house though) I would still have to buy an extra DirecTV receiver, so total investment would've been ~$200+. For ~$49. more, I get an extra DTV receiver and the capability to record from it too. PLUS .. only one receiver charge (no mirror recvr fee for the 2nd DTV rcvr).

Now .. if they would've sold the SVR-2000 for a more reasonable $50 - 75. (w/o the remote and power cable) I would've probly kept it, added a HD, and sent it to my dad! (and still get the DTiVo as well!)

So, good luck all at Wally World! I'm out ..

I am DYING to get my hands on a Sony SA in just about any state (condition AND location)! Has anyone seen any cheap ones kicking around?

Got one for sale?

I've had a hard time finding NEW Sony SVR-2000's. Only Circus City had them and they were $399 with $100 mail-in rebate.. that's what I paid for mine last year!

Boy, I would love to find THAT sale. My original Sony modem died and when I took it to CC for exchange, they didn't want the remote, cables, box, etc. Got a new boxed unit with all that too, so I have everything EXCEPT a Sony PVR for a second unit. I'd buy one for $99 in a heartbeat.

The copy of the $125.00 receipt didnt work for me at Walmart. "They dont price match themselves, due to regional sales competition reasons." The store manager indicated that some stores price things lower then other because they may be having price wars with a Target of Kmart in that area. I think I'll Kmart.

Has anyone else had any success using the copy of the receipt at Kmart or BestBuy?

If someone could email me a copy of that receipt I would really appreciate it. I am anxious to give this a try.

Thanks.

Picked up a 112 tonight, Walmart, Brooklyn Park, MN in sealed box for $100. A demo machine without cables, documents, remote or box remains for the same price. The local K-mart also has 112's on the shelf - I wonder if they'd match the price.

I was thumbing through all the previous posts to see if there was a link to this receipt everyone is talking about. I couldn't find a link. So if someone wouldn't mind and had the free time, could you please send me a copy so I can see if it works here in central NJ? Thanks a billion.
