Is it 10GB or 10 MB? If it is 10 MB then the drive is prob only locked -- look at hinsdale's upgrade how to and it will tell you how to unlock a drive. I got my 80 GB Maxtor from Staples and it has worked beautifully so far.

Any drive that didn't originally come in a TiVo won't be locked.

Try turning off BIOS recognition of the drive; it's in the FAQ.

Actually if you stick a quantum drive in the TiVo and boot it up, the TiVo will lock the drive (neat trick huh?). Use TiVoMad's qunlock.exe to unlock the drive.

Actually will do it with any drive that has the Quantum firmware.. including many of the new Maxtor (Quaxtor) drives.

What does "locking" the drive really do?

Causes the drive to misreport it's actual capacity - it can still access the first bit of the drive, but it'll refuse to access the rest of it until it's unlocked. Older drive firmware had bugs that would cause stuff like switching to LBA mode to unlock the drive (hence why dlgchk used to work) inadvertently.

qunlock unlocks the drive properly - it gives back the proper challenge/responses, and rewrites the locks to eliminate the locking.

This was done most likely to prevent people from trying to fraudulently get a free hard drive from TiVo - buy a TiVo, remove hard drive, return TiVo as "nonfunctional" and get a free hard drive. (30 GB hard drives were popular to rip off...). I wonder if ReplayTV or UTV have the same issues...
