Talking New drive survives SW upgrade

I finally got V 1.3 software on my 14 (now 52) hour box and the upgrade took place flawlessly. According to the logs, all of the upgrade scripts treated the new 30.7 gig WD as a full-fledged member of the family and no error messages were generated.

Additionally, the scripts picked up my boot sector hack and added it into the new boot record. (i.e. switched root from hda4 to hda7 and left shondss completely intact instead of overwriting it)

V 1.3 also brings more shell functionality to the game. I now have stty (currently blazing along @ 115200) and chmod so I don't feel like a red-headed step-child in there anymore.

My next goal is to find a way to flip that damned "media switch" to the line input so I can ditch those miserable DTV listings and eliminate my 4-5 hour indexing sessions.

You realize that you may have set a world record with this one - the height at which this went over peoples heads (mine included) .

The only thing I didn't get was the step child part. Perhaps it's a regional thing?

hmmm, i've heard that one in boston and here in california. means 'undesirable or left out member of the family'. more or less. In explanation and trying to be circumspect here, vikings (who often had red hair) would...umm...raid a village and occasionally leave behind a few 9 month time bombs. these 'red headed step children' were often ostracized by the family or ignored'.

And if you don't have the 'chmod' command to change file permissions, that's pretty much the way Unix treats you.
