Low speed port

I am using the low speed port to control my RCA satellite receiver. Works fine. I was wondering if anyone has hacked the low speed port to determine if it can control the entire Tivo. Many pieces of high end gear provide for RS232 control for their devices in addition to IR control. All of my newer A/V components do this. Since I control the theater with a PC (which can generate any IR I want it to), I prefer RS232 to IR since it is generally bidirectional and much more reliable. Any help available?

Yes, you can control the Tivo over the serial connection. No, it's not very nice. Make your own interface. Of course, to do this thing, currently, you have to open up the tivo and mess with the hard drive.

It looks _possible_ to control it without opening it up, but noone has figured out the password yet.

I suspect you are correct on the Possibilities. What I would like to see Tivo do is have two passwords or just one to cover administrative things, testing, and other things, plus another (or none at all) for normal control in lieu of a IR remote. That could even be two way so a control system could get status of the Tivo such as channel tuned to etc.

Any chance of hooking up an external modem to the serial port? The modem on my friends new TiVo stopped working after only a week.
