Question Where does the unit ID reside?

Hi,

I'm considering buying another unit (14hr) just to obtain a good backup? Does the ID number that is registered reside on the HD or on the motherboard? Could I backup the 14 hr hard drive and use it to restore my 30 hour unit if need be?

Also, if I buy a used/upgraded unit from Ebay or the like, does the service contract transfer with it?

Thanks for your help,
AZJimbo

The serial number is contained on a special crypto chip on the motherboard not the hard drive.

The TiVo software does not automatically expand to take up all available on drive A. So if you do that then your 30 hour unit will be downgraded to a 14 hour unit, wasting half your hard disk space.

The service only transfers to you if the original owner bought life time service. If they are on the month to month plan then you will have to sign up for service on your own.

Thanks,

But then how does one upgrade a Tivo unit. Can you do it by only adding a drive and "blessing it" with the disk in the Hacker forum?

It will recognize all the space on drive B when you put it in, but it will not expand the A drive to take up any extra space. Check out the TiVo Hack FAQ it should have all the info you need to do the upgrade.

If the 30hr unit shipped with 1.3 then make sure the 14hr unit is running 1.3 software before backing it up- 30hr (and new 20hr and 60hr) units shipped with 1.3 will not upgrade if 1.2.x is installed on it.
