Question Why use Maxtor UDMAUDPT utility?

I recently downloaded the Maxtor UDMAUDPT utility, to add to my collection of TiVo hard drive tools on a DOS (actually Win98) boot disk (AMSET, WVSET, MAXDIAG, QDPSATA, DLGCHK).

What's the purpose of UDMAUDPT? I have seen this program mentioned here before, to adjust the ATA speed (ATA/33, ATA/66, ATA/100). How should this command be used on a TiVo? I've heard of this command being used before, but am not sure why.

I have a Maxtor hard drive and didn't use it before installing the drive into my TiVo, and it seems to be working fine so far...

I haven't used it, but my assumption would be that since the IDE connection and cable in the TiVo are just UDMA33, it might help to set the drive to 33. I would have thought the drive's firmware would autosense it, but it shouldn't hurt.

Just a guess.

TiVo runs on the ATA/33 interface; the new Maxtor hard drives ship with ATA/66 enabled. Running a drive in ATA/66 mode on a PC that doesn't support ATA/66 can cause problems; theoretically, it could also cause problems in your TiVo.

So just to be safe, we run UDMAUPDT. The proper syntax is as follows:

udmaupdt /dma:2

BELLLLCHHHH......Why Not?!?

Basically yes...the tivo and cable are udma/33. there is a reported problem with some drives and some bios's not handling a /66 or /100 drive and not negotiating properly, causing some problems. no reason to believe the tivo suffers from this malady, but it doesnt hurt to set it at /33, takes a minute, its how i set mine (along with wvset off and amset off and a pair of write tests with maxdiag) and it runs 100% no problems, no skips, no hiccups, no funny noises, and fairly quiet.

Just a quick question, what is the 'QDPSATA' utility that Krellan referred to? I did a search on the forum for it, and this is the first time it is mentioned. is this a quantum utility for the lct15's, or a maxtor utility I haven't heard about, or something else entirely?

Its the quantum equivalent of the MAXDIAG program. i havent used it, but i would recommend running it on quantum drives you plan to use as a backup disk or a b drive.

I didnt see the s/w library on the quantum site (blindness is setting in apparently) so i fdisked, formatted and scandisk'd my backup quantum drive before using it.

I used the tool, It worked great, I don't see any visible difference but again why not run it if you want to make sure you are as close to the orginal. The program only took a second to run and worked on my LCT15.

Actually its called QDPS: Quantum "Data Protection System"

Here's a thread that references it and links the software.
