Post Backup settings to VCR

Hi all,

After reading a post about someone who lost all of their data recently, and the fact that many folks have asked for someway to backup the setup info on their Tivos, this "solution" popped into my head. Its not really a backup, but its a way to record all the info on the Tivo easily.

Just put a tape in the VCR, start it recording the Tivo output and then sit with the remote and go through all the important Tivo menus. Display each of your season passes & wishlists, page through your channel lineup, etc. Pause for a few seconds on each screen so you can really see what's there. When your done, stick the tape somewhere safe and if you every have to redo the Tivo setup for any reason, at least you'll have a definitive copy of what it looked like. Of course, you may need to update the tape periodically depending on how many changes you make, but its better than writing it all down.

Mike

I used to do that, but instead capturing the images from the VCRs to my computer. Typically during college breaks when they'd kick us out of the dorms and make us unplug everything.

Now, with my TiVos, I just have all my recordings planned out in a 24/7 spreadsheet. All the better to determine how to handle conflicts. Every now and then I page through the To Do list to update airtimes.

I'm going to have to update it soon to handle three TiVos instead of only two.

Wow. Being a person who had to wipe my drive image for an upgrade (don't ask, it happened that my exact setup didn't work with the current version of underground software, and yes I DID talk with the author), I could have really used this. I spent an hour writing everything down and 1.5 hours typing it all back in!

Good tip for the future, thanks.
