Refurbished disk drives? Unlikely... It would cost more to refurbish them than to buy new.

Probably the confusion was because the word "refurbished" was visible in the link address.

The drive very well may be refurbished. Dell states on the packing slips:

"Parts purchased from Dell's Spare Parts Sales Department are sold as 'reconditioned.' "

The above link is reached through Dell's "Software and Peripherals" tab. It is listed with a whole bunch of drives and is absolutely new. Mine arrives tomorrow

I just checked the link 5 minutes ago, and the price is now up to $192.74. Did you have any $$ off or % off coupons or other discounts? Or did I just miss the sale?

Thumbs down

Just be advised that the once-stellar Newegg is now shipping drives taped back-to-back in bubble wrap. This, according to Maxtor, will void your warranty! I will NEVER buy from them again!! Dell however, ships their drives in the foam cut outs as drives are supposed to be shipped. Definitely worth a few extra centavos!

Also, Newegg isn't as attractive to those of us in California, due to the 8.25% state extort- - I mean
sales tax.

The Dell price is the best I've seen. I just ordered two.

Delayed shipment

I ordered two with 10% discount, free shipping, no state tax for a total to the door price of $173.47 each. First was promised shipment by today, but today got email saying shipment delayed until 4/10.

Still, I'll be getting the drives I want at a good price, shipped properly. By the way, Sunday night the Dell site was extremely slow. Otherwise a decent experience.

I actually ended up ordering a third one Monday night before the sale ended. Initially, all the orders showed status of "Delayed" with no projected ship date. Today, I see that my 2 drive order shipped Tuesday. The other drive is still listed as delayed. Must be some "just in time" supply issues.

Hmm... I wouldn't go running out with my wallet like its on fire yet.

It seems that storage is in a price freefall ... seems like it always is ... I snagged one for $177 + Tax&ship. Too bad I can't use it yet because of the danged Sony 13 partition.

Why does the partition image determine if you can use the drive or not? I have a Sony 30 hr unit and am looking for a "B" drive to put in with it. What is the problem?

I intended to just replace my A drive with the 120 GB drive. I tried to do a DD from the original A to the new A. But if i wanted to "expand" the new A to reflect the new capacity, it wouldnt work. Now I'm stuck looking for an 11 partition image that works with TiVoMad or blessing the new drive as a new B.

heh call me paranoid but i just wanted to keep my original A intact.

Hey Jerry,

How come you living in Antioch CA can buy from Dell and not be charged sales tax and me living about 30 miles away in Danville CA do get charged 8.25% sales tax?

I got ripped off!

Tim

p.s. I ended up having to finish my order over the phone because the web site wouldn't post my discount. Maybe phone orders get charged tax. Maybe it's just arbitrary...

At least as of a couple of days ago they also had a coupon for like $25 off an order of $250 or more - and it was 'stackable' with the 10% discount.

I wanted 3 drives (1 to upgrade my S2, two for my S1) and my housemate needed some stuff. He ended up making it as two orders - two drives and one drive with the other stuff - so we could use the $25 off coupon twice. More overall savings than doing it on one order, even with shipping.
