Angry TiVo deleted my unwatched shows early for suggestions?

My Tivo deleted 2 shows early for no reason but to record Tivo suggestions. I sat down to watch Roswell and Felicity on Friday and had only Dark Angel recording, a previous recording of Friends and Will and Grace, and about 10 Tivo Suggestions. I checked my recording history and Roswell was deleted Thursday at 10:30am and Felicity was deleted at 12:20pm. I did not have any shows scheduled to record at that time!

I have a 14 hour Tivo and have been a proud Tivo owner for almost 2 years now. I have had this happen before in the past and I thought it my fault for recording too many shows, but my recording history proves it.

I have turned off suggestions for now to solve this problem, but I'm really upset because my suggestions were always accurate. I found some really good stuff from them. Anyone know if this is a known bug and what Tivo is doing about it?

Patrick

Do a search for early deletion bug. I do not know the specifics but I think you were hit by the early deletion bug.

I did a search - all I could find on this problem was people who hit it when transitioning to 2.0.1. So if you know something, please enlighten us - has happened to me as well

Thanks for telling me to search. Turns out I'm not alone. This bug seems to have been around way too long. Shouldn't Tivo have just released a bug fix when they found out about this?

Loosing two season premieres has emotionally scarred me. What is Tivo going to do for me to easy my pain?

Jeff-

It appears to stick around for people that have 2.0.1

I'm personally shocked that Tivo would let such a serious bug last this long.

Worse, they seem to have retracted the statement that it is fixed in 2.5.

Myself, I'm more upset that my cable box has developed a penchant for turning itself off (and any devices plugged into its "Always on" AC outlet) just before prime time, resulting in recordings of black screens instead of my shows.

That's got to be one of the weirdest bugs out there. We heard a lot about it when 2.01 came out, but it had died down to nothing. Now here it pops up again. Are you using 2.01 or 2.5?

I'm not sure if TiVoInc knows what causes this. I usually keep my TiVo clean, but occasionally (like this weekend) I let it fill up with Suggestions. On Sat, it recorded 6 hrs of SeasonPass NFL, and blew away all but three of em, just as it should.

I thought this bug had been exterminated.

Suggestions basically suck, anyway. They just clog your "Now Playing" list with garbage that, in all likelihood, you'll never watch. You can always scan the list of suggestions and manually record things that interest you.

A lot of people like Suggestions. Also, I'm sure there are many people that don't like them, but are forced to use them because there isn't any other way to tell how much space you have left on your Tivo - without manually counting, or manually entering data into one of those painful database programs.

It's so much easier to just scroll down to the end of your Now Playing list and see how many suggestions you have left.

Personally if there was another easy way to do this, I'd never use suggestions at all. But again that doesn't help people that actually like them.

If Tivo was a normal computer company you can bet this would be a priority 1 bug. Data loss like this is completely unacceptable. Apparently Tivo doesn't think they're obligated to their customers in the same way - do they not know how to fix it, or are they just not bothering to do it?

This bug's active on my machine as well, and burns my butt... I've got suggestions turned off for now; it seems I have no choice... (I suppose it won't matter once I've got an 80g drive added in, but I can't afford that for another month or two...)

It's been known to happen to people with fairly spacious hard drives, too, though more rarely.

I've had some very good luck with Suggestions, probably because I like a narrow-enough range of special stuff -- animal documentaries and SF shows -- that the Suggestions algorithm can make good guesses.

It never died down. People who experienced this bug are not posting about it because previous posts fell on death ears. TiVo retracted even admission that this bug exists. There is no reason to post about it because nothing going to change any time soon. If 2.5 doesn't fix it (there is a good chance it will - according to RB TiVo cleaned up a lot of code around scheduler) then I would say we'll never see it fixed.
There are several workarounds that one can use:
1. Mark all important recordings SUID. If you start running out of space, upgrade the HD.
2. Disable suggestions and keep number of SP and wishlists to minimum.
3. Buy another non-Tivo PVR and record important shows on it.
Personally, I'm using combination of #2 and #3 and it works great for me.

I can tell you from personal experience that the early deletion bug still exists with 2.5.

It's taken several weeks, but my TiVo's suggestions are really pretty great. Every now and then it'll grab something that'll seem random to me, but I just "thumbs down" those. Use thumbs down only when TiVo records bogus programming, and you might have better results.

The thing is I really like Tivo suggestions! I want to turn them back on. RB- can't you do something to speed up the bug fix on this?

I have a SAT-60 with ver 2.5 and I had the early deletion bug hit me this weekend. It actually deleted a couple of "keep until I delete" programs. So the bug is alive and well.

Samo,

I'm holding my breath in the hope that one day, soon, you'll have something positive to say about anything.

So what kind of campaign do we need to start in order to correct this bug? Deleting shows early is a MAJOR bug! What if word gets out to prospective Tivo buyers? Can you say... Tivo killer bug?

Please check your Recording History for details on any recordings that you think were deleted "early". Many people have found out that someone else with access to the remote deleted it, for instance. I'm not implying that no one has ever had a recording deleted early.

Also, Tivo, with the owner's permission, has retrieved the logfiles for many people's Tivos who have had a problem. You may want to request this support too. They can probably tell exactly when/how/why from the logfiles...

Brett-

Thanks for the advice, but I live at home alone. My Tivo had no other reason to delete shows in the morning and early afternoon but to do it for suggestions. All my season passes are for prime time shows.

I'd be willing to call customer servicec. But maybe a Tivo employee that watches the forum can create a case number or something that we can reference this problem with when we call customer service. This way, all of us that have the bug can call in with this case number and get this bug solved faster. What do you guys think?

Patrick
