Shell script question - manipulating text strings

I'm writing a shell script and would like to be able to manipulate text strings. Yeah I could do it in TCL using the string command but would rather do it if possible with linux shell commands.

I know how to parse words with the for command but would like to be able to separate the text string character by relative position, ala TCl string range. The TiVo doesn't appear to have any tools for this, but maybe I've missed something.

Has the cut command been compiled for TiVo? Maybe grep regexp would do what I want? Any suggestions?

I found cut at the sonnik site bundled in tivo-bin.tar.gz. This should serve my purpose.
Thanks

awk is another one that could do it, but is overkill and a larger binary.

Four TiVos now, all with single Samsung drives:
Humax DRT800 w/DVD-R (174hrs)
Two older Series 2's (142hrs and 157hrs),and a newer nightlight
Series 2, a stupid case design IMO (174hrs)
All but the last are lifetimed. TiVite since 2000. There is a Good IR solution.

Dtype has compiled awk and sed for TiVo - it should take care of all your text processing needs. Find them here.

Finally found an easy answer to my question in the O'Reilly book on the Bash Shell.
This will return substring:
${varname : offset}
or
${varname : offset : length}
