USB Placement

So, I was thinking about the possible uses of those USB Ports (other than unsupported ethernet programming downloads). The usual things were coming up... photos, music, yadda yadda. And then I thought...

"Why the hell are the USB Ports on the BACK?" I mean, I venture that most people have their Tivo's inside an entertainment center or something. Shouldn't those ports be more easily accessible?

I would suggest they move them at least to the side for future releases. As currently configured, it means I'm going to have YET ANOTHER DAMN CABLE lying around (a USB Extender) if they ever try to do anything cool "hot swappable" or anything like that.

While a front port would certainly be nice it poses a problem for the entertainment center crowd. A USB cable left plugged in on the front might prevent the door from being shut.

, if it were something left plugged in, it wouldn't be annoying to have in the back. But when its something you temporarily plug in like a rio or a digital camera to upload mp3s and pictures, the port needs to be accessible. It should be in the front. Of course I would prefer tivo focus on recording tv and not try to be a home media center. But the company has said it would be going in that direction.

The only way to get around this would be having USB ports in both the front and the back. USB ethernet adapters, which will probably be the most common use of the ports, belong in the back and not the front. Digital cameras, MP3 players, and the like belong in the front. It all depends how much TiVo really ends up using the USB ports for. Perhaps future models will include front USB ports if there is a need/demand for them.

I don't think it's likely that more than a small percentage of users are going to be hooking their cameras and MP3 players to their TiVo. That being the case it doesn't make sense to spend a nickel to put a USB port on the front. If it's something you really want I'm sure you can get an extension or hub to have your USB connection available in a handy place.
