Power Up Freeze - S2

Hey all, I'm a fan of the forum, and it inspired to have me get out and hack my Tivo.

Here is the deal:

I have a new S2 24004A and I wanted to add an 80gb hdd to it. Well, it seems that every time I get the drives ready to go, it wont boot up past the Welcome, Powering Up screen. I've got a belkin cable ata 133 without the pin blocker in it and a generic cable that is supposed to be ata 66.

I can use the new 80gb hdd with the IDE cable supplied with the Tivo (which is for 1 drive) and I can use the 40gb hdd with the supplied cable again only for one drive, but it doesn't work at all when only one is plugged into the new cables.

Just to be clear, I can't get EITHER drive to work with these NEW cables...any thoughts on that?

I am puzzled by this...if anybody knows what the story is, I'd love to have the inside story

thanks,
Steve Jones aka 'joneSi'

Check your jumpers and cable orientation!

I cannot think of any reason the cable would cause this on their own unless they are defective. Check your jumpers and recheck them. Your post was unclear but it SOUNDS like you did testing where everything was kept the same except switching cables...right? Also, most cables are "keyed" but some are not. Make sure the "striped edge" of the cable (usually red or blue) is oriented to the side of the IDE connector that the 4 pin power connector is on. Aside from that if you have another cable you may want to check that one or get a new one.

Good luck,

Yes the drives were tested so that everything was the same except the cables, so I can't get the 2 drives to work together.

Now I can get it so that it gets me to the 'almost there' screen, and then it restarts. ARGH.

I'm ready to go out and buy an 80 hr recorder. This is frustrating :|

EDIT: I've checked and recheck this stuff...Jumpers, cable, etc. Not a clue. Thougths??

Thanks,
Steve Jones

Well.....

I tried to get it to work with 2 Western Digital hard drives, and it worked . I got the hard drive out of a P4 that I had built and don't use...so the Tivo has an 80gb and a 60gb WD drives. I've noticed in the past Maxtor drives don't ususally 'play' well with others, so I gave it a shot and it worked. Now I've got my tivo image on the old maxtor, just in case, and on a cd, just in case again. I'm in BUSINESS!
